8/16/2008 4:12:55 PM - Dallas Considers Requiring Security Measures At Convenience Stores
|
|
DALLAS A Dallas task force is proposing an ordinance requiring convenience stores to have certain security measures in an effort to reduce crime.
The Dallas Police Department makes an average of 6,300 calls to convenience stores each year.
A task force set up by Mayor Tom Leppert is proposing an ordinance that would make it mandatory for convenience stores to have quality surveillance cameras, alarm systems with panic buttons, drop safes, security signs and owner approval for police to write trespass warnings.
"It just makes it a lot less attractive for criminals to be there," Leppert said.
Store manager Hossein Tabaei said his store has been broken into seven times.
"People are scared of coming here and (buying) the gas here at night," he said.
After thieves drove a truck through his front window last week, Tabaei installed a state-of-the-art security system with 16 cameras.
Convenience store managers who spoke with NBC 5 said they will do their part if the police do theirs.
"Police must respond fast," Tabaei said.
"I think if they would catch a few of these thugs, it would put an end to it," he said.
The City Council's Public Safety Committee will be briefed on the proposals Monday morning.
